Bing Webmaster Tools has long been a source of pain for anyone in the Online marketing business. It was missing many of the cool and useful features Google had implemented in their webmaster tools, and it didn’t seem to help much with managing the way Bing sees your websites.

Mike Blumenthal recently posted about an update to the Google places quality guidelines. The guidelines can be found here but for the sake of convenience I’ve posted them below.

Rating and Reviews Can Change the Perception of your Business
There’s no doubt about it, online reviews and ratings make a difference when it comes to changing perceptions about the nature of a local business. Local businesses are discovering that word-of-mouth is not only verbal communication, it’s cyberspace communication as well, and the cyberspace communications may represent more credence that the typical “they do a good job” recommendation given verbally by existing or past clients.

The next time you look at the search engine results page in Bing you may see which of those results your Facebook friends have “Liked”.
As we mentioned in an earlier blog post, this is a natural extension of Bing’s focus on Social media and their partnership with Facebook. This integration will highlight the sites or links your friends have publicly liked or shared on Facebook.

How secure is your website? How about your hosting account?
We have recently been involved with two clients who’s websites were hacked by amateur hackers who apparently were just out to have some fun - posting images where the website used to be. In my previous post I discussed site speed as both a ranking and User Experience factor. If your pages load slowly your website visitors will probably go elsewhere - that’s just a fact.
So what are some of the things you can do? Here’s an easy win for most sites - use a CDN (Content delivery network). There’s enough information out there for you to search so I’m going to focus on some test results that we did making use of a large-ish javascript file.

I have two questions for you this morning:
- Does your business have a Facebook presence yet?
- Have you checked that the results of your search engine optimization campaign are as effective on Bing as they are on Google?
There’s been a fair amount of publicity surrounding Google’s quarrel with Facebook surrounding the sharing of user data. Microsoft / Bing on the other hand, seems to be getting along quite nicely with Facebook. They’re using the Facebook “Like” signal in their local ranking factors and look set to expand on this into other verticals.

Its taken almost twelve years but on December 14th 2010, the Canadian Senate voted to accept Bill C-28. What is disappointing is that we are the LAST country in the G8 to introduce anti-spam legislation - frankly I would have expected Canada to be one of the first.
There are a number of interesting points that I noticed while reviewing the summary:
