Google Ads Makes Changes Trademark Complaint Process

July 11, 2023
Changes to Google’s trademark complaint process.

Starting July 24, Google Ads will introduce global changes to its Trademark Policy, where trademark complaints will only be considered against specific advertisers and ads. The aim is to simplify and expedite the resolution process and reduce industry-wide restrictions, addressing frustrations for advertisers. Previously, under the existing policy, entire industries could face restrictions on using trademarked material when complaints were filed, leading to over-flagging and widespread blocks that caused significant issues for advertisers. The new policy seeks to provide more clarity and transparency, allowing Google to respond more promptly to trademark complaints from advertisers.

Google is notifying advertisers about these changes, and while trademark restrictions imposed before July 24 will remain in effect, the company plans to gradually phase out these limitations for most advertisers over the next 12-18 months. The updated policy is intended to protect partners with legitimate complaints while still enabling consumers to discover information about new products or services, according to a statement from a Google spokesperson to Search Engine Land. Ultimately, the goal is to create a more efficient and fair system that benefits both advertisers and users.
